It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, Dr. Ved Shravah.
For over four decades, our father was a pillar in the New York education communities - Dutchess County, Ulster County & in Albany. However, his journey as an educator and servant leader began much earlier. Born in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, he dedicated his life to education, mentorship, and serving others with integrity, wisdom, and compassion.
After earning advanced degrees in Physics and Mathematics, he began his career as a Professor of Mathematics before embarking on an international teaching career. His passion for education took him from India to the Fiji Islands, where he quickly rose to become Head of the Mathematics and Science Departments at DAV College in Ba. He later continued his academic career as a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University of the South Pacific in Western Samoa. Throughout his years abroad, he became known not only for his excellence as an educator but also for mentoring students and helping expand educational opportunities for underserved communities.
After settling in New York, our father continued to devote his life to education and public service. He made history as the first member of the local Indian community to run for the Wappingers Central School District Board of Education. He went on to serve the district for more than 15 years, including multiple terms as Board President. Throughout his tenure, he earned the admiration and respect of educators, school districts across the region, and leaders throughout New York State for his unwavering commitment to educational excellence, fiscal responsibility, and meaningful reform.
During the last two decades of his career, he served at the New York State Education Department in Albany, where he worked to improve educational programs and policies that benefited students across the state. During this time, he also became a respected leader within the Public Employees Federation (PEF), advocating for public employees and supporting the education community throughout New York.
Our father's commitment to service extended far beyond education. He generously gave his time to the Hindu Temple and Hindu Cultural Center in Albany, where he served as a member of the Board of Directors, and at the time of his passing was also serving on the Board of Directors of the Tri-City India Association (TRICIA).
Beyond his many accomplishments, our father will be remembered for his humility, generosity, unwavering optimism, and genuine kindness. He was a mentor, trusted friend, and source of encouragement to countless people. Whether helping a student pursue an education, volunteering his time, or offering guidance to those in need, he always believed that one person could make a difference. His legacy of leadership, selfless service, and dedication to education, faith, and community will continue to inspire generations to come.
Our father's final rites were performed in accordance with Arya Samaj traditions. To carry forward his lifelong commitment to education and service, we have established the Ved Shravah Foundation, which will provide educational scholarships for deserving students and help future generations pursue their dreams.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor our father's memory by supporting the Ved Shravah Foundation. Every contribution will create educational opportunities for deserving students while continuing his lifelong mission of learning, service, and giving back.
With love and gratitude,
Aashu, Aashmita & Aasheesh
Our dear friend, Dr. Ved Shravah, lived a life dedicated to serving others and making a positive difference in both the community and the Public Employees Federation (PEF). Through his unwavering commitment, thoughtful leadership, and strong voice, he championed causes that benefited working people and the broader community. He willingly accepted many responsibilities and played an important role in supporting leaders and candidates whom he believed would serve the public with integrity.
Driven by his desire to create meaningful change, Dr. Ved Shravah also entered public service. As the Chair of the School Board in the district where he lived, he brought decades of educational experience to the position. Having taught not only in the United States but also abroad, he guided the board with wisdom, professionalism, and a lifelong commitment to education.
An accomplished mathematician, Dr. Ved Shravah inspired and mentored countless young students. His passion for teaching helped many achieve academic success, and his influence shaped the futures of those fortunate enough to learn from him.
He was also a devoted advocate for Sanskrit, a love and appreciation he inherited from his mother, who herself was a distinguished scholar of the language. He took great pride in preserving and sharing this rich cultural heritage with others.
What truly distinguished Dr. Ved Shravah, however, was his generous spirit and willingness to help anyone in need. One memorable example speaks volumes about his character. While stranded overnight at an airport after missing a connecting flight, he met a young airport employee who was preparing for an important mathematics examination. Without hesitation, Dr. Ved spent the night tutoring him, helping him understand the subject and build his confidence. Sometime later, the young man contacted him with wonderful news: he had successfully passed the examination and wanted to express his heartfelt gratitude. That simple act of kindness reflected who Dr. Ved Shravah truly was—a man with a compassionate heart who never hesitated to share his knowledge for the benefit of others.
The passing of our dear friend is a profound loss. Yet his life continues to inspire all who knew him. His dedication to education, organized labor, public service, and community involvement leaves a lasting legacy. It is now our responsibility to carry forward the values he exemplified—service, integrity, compassion, and commitment to making our communities better places.
May the soul of our beloved friend, Dr. Ved Shravah, rest in eternal peace.
May God bless his soul and grant comfort and strength to his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
